A festive holiday celebration turned chaotic Saturday evening when a police motorcycle crashed into parade spectators in downtown Palm Springs, leaving 10 people injured including the officer.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. along the parade route near 288 North Palm Canyon Drive when, according to multiple witnesses, a traffic officer lost control of his motorcycle while attempting a wheelie maneuver. In the process, the officer reportedly severed his hand and the riderless motorcycle continued into the crowd.
Among those hurt were at least one child and two elderly individuals. Six people were seen being transported on stretchers, though all appeared alert. Palm Springs Police confirmed that while injuries ranged from minor to moderate, none were life-threatening.
"I was telling my partner they were going dumbly fast," said witness Byron Ruvalcaba of Riverside, estimating the motorcycle's speed at 25-35 mph before the crash. "There are kids running around."
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills addressed the incident on social media, calling it an "unfortunate accident."
"I feel terrible about the accident and injuries to the very people we protect," Mills stated. "As Chief of Police, I am responsible for this department and the men and women who serve. After we conduct our investigations, I will report back to the community."
The parade, an annual tradition drawing thousands of visitors to downtown Palm Springs, was temporarily paused but later resumed. The California Highway Patrol has taken charge of the investigation.
While some eyewitnesses reported seeing the officer perform a wheelie before losing control, Palm Springs officials characterized such accounts as "rumors" pending the official investigation.
The city expressed support for all affected, stating "Our thoughts are with the officer, his family and all of those injured today."
