A 20-year-old Carlsbad, California man is under investigation after authorities discovered he had been communicating with the Wisconsin school shooter about plans to attack a government building.
According to court documents released Wednesday, the man had been messaging with Natalie Rupnow, the 15-year-old student who carried out Monday's deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. During their exchanges, they allegedly discussed coordinating attacks.
In interviews with FBI agents, the man admitted to telling Rupnow about his intentions to use explosives to target an unspecified government building. The timing and specific location of the planned attack were not disclosed.
A California judge issued a temporary restraining order against the man under the state's gun red flag law, effective through December 23. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for January 3.
The revelation comes as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to Monday's school shooting, where Rupnow killed a 14-year-old student and a teacher before taking her own life. Two other students remain in critical condition.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said authorities are working with the FBI to examine online records and interview those close to Rupnow to determine what motivated the attack. Police have not yet established if specific individuals were targeted or how long the shooting had been planned.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine if charges will be filed against additional parties. The Carlsbad man's custody status was not immediately clear as of Wednesday evening.
