Selected through expert nominations and reader votes, these California establishments stood out among thousands of new restaurants that opened across the nation in the past 18 months.

San Francisco's Z & Y Peking Duck

The restaurant's signature Peking duck, carved tableside, exemplifies their commitment to both authentic flavors and elegant presentation. Dining experiences typically range from $50 to $100 per person.

Los Angeles' Norikay

Norikay offers an elevated Japanese dining experience in Los Angeles, featuring traditional dishes with contemporary flair. The menu highlights include expertly crafted temaki and fresh sashimi, with prices ranging from $9 for spicy tuna rolls to $23 for filet mignon with mushrooms. The establishment's beverage program features sake selections from $12 to $210.

Lake Tahoe's Smoke Door Saryo

Kings Beach's Smoke Door Lake Tahoe Saryo combines wood-fired Japanese cooking with local ingredients and seasonal items from Japan. The restaurant offers both six-course ($128) and ten-course ($198) tasting menus, with optional wine pairings. À la carte options range from $28 for chicken to $98 for Wagyu steak.

While California dominated with three entries, the top honor went to Tootles & French in New York City's Astoria neighborhood. This wine bar and café earned the number one spot for its sophisticated dining experience and carefully curated wine selection.
