In response to devastating Los Angeles firestorms, California has expanded its support services through Disaster Recovery Centers, offering both online and in-person assistance to affected residents.
The state has deployed specialized teams at recovery centers to help survivors navigate insurance claims, temporary housing options, and rebuilding processes. Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced mandatory advance payments from insurance companies to expedite recovery for those who lost their homes.
"My top priority is getting claims paid as quickly as possible so survivors can begin rebuilding their lives," said Commissioner Lara. The Department of Insurance is hosting free workshops in Pasadena on January 25-26 to help residents understand their policies and available resources.
Governor Gavin Newsom signed a $2.5 billion bipartisan relief package to accelerate recovery efforts. The funding supports emergency protective measures, debris removal, rebuilding of damaged schools, and expedited building approvals.
Key support measures include:
- Extended tax filing deadlines for affected residents
- Streamlined rebuilding permits
- Protection from price gouging on rent and construction materials
- Expanded temporary housing options
- Accelerated debris removal services
- Support for displaced students
Residents can access one-on-one appointments with Department experts by calling 800-927-4357. The state has also positioned specialized teams at recovery centers to assist with potential mudflow risks ahead of wet weather.
The relief efforts involve coordination between multiple agencies, with over 16,000 personnel deployed to battle the fires and support recovery operations. The state continues to monitor the situation and adjust resources to meet community needs.
