The California National Guard has deployed crews to help with recovery efforts after a devastating mudslide struck near Altadena. Members of Tollhouse units 1 and 4 are now on the ground supporting cleanup operations in the affected area.
The mudslide occurred when heavy rains triggered flash flooding in regions previously scorched by the Eaton Fire. The January wildfire, which claimed at least 17 lives and burned through more than 14,000 acres before being fully contained, left the terrain particularly vulnerable to flooding and debris flows.
Burn scars from wildfires often create hazardous conditions during rainstorms, as the charred ground cannot properly absorb water. This leads to increased runoff and heightened risk of mudslides, which can cause extensive damage to communities in the path of debris flows.
National Guard crews are now working alongside local emergency responders to clear roads, remove debris, and assist residents impacted by the mudslide. Their efforts focus on restoring access to affected areas and preventing additional damage as the cleanup continues.
