Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that residents impacted by recent Los Angeles County wildfires can now access emergency food assistance through the Disaster CalFresh program.
Eligible families who lived or worked in fire-affected areas on January 7, 2025, can receive a one-time food benefit. For example, a family of four earning up to $3,529 monthly could qualify for $975 in assistance.
"My administration is focused on serving individuals and families who need our help the most," said Governor Newsom. "Starting February 10th, I encourage eligible people to apply for D-CalFresh benefits, which will allow more families to put more food on the table."
To qualify, applicants must:
- Live or work in designated fire-impacted ZIP codes
- Not currently receive regular CalFresh benefits
- Have experienced financial impacts from the wildfires, such as lost work income or property damage
- Meet income requirements
Applications will be accepted from February 10-14 and February 18-19, 2025. Residents can apply by calling 866-488-8482 or visiting a Los Angeles DPSS office in person. Approved applicants will receive EBT cards for purchasing food within three days of their qualifying interview.
The state has also implemented additional support measures:
- Current CalFresh recipients can now purchase hot prepared foods
- Extended timeframe for requesting replacement benefits for food lost during fires
- $1 million in emergency funding for food boxes and water distribution through LA Regional Food Bank
First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom emphasized the program's importance: "No family should have to worry about how they're going to put food on the table, especially during a crisis. D-CalFresh food benefits will help ensure that those most in need have access to critical assistance."
Affected residents seeking more information about replacement benefits can contact Los Angeles DPSS at (866) 613-3777 on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
