Things you must know about salmonella outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recently confirmed that outbreak of antibiotic-resistant salmonella linked to Foster Farms chicken is still alive, with most illness cases being reported in California.
The federal agency revealed that there were fifty new reported illness cases in the past two months, nearly eight new illnesses per week. The new cases pushed the total number of illnesses linked to Foster Farms chicken to 574. Let's have a look at some important aspects of the outbreak.
The outbreak is centered on the west coast. The salmonella cases in question were reported in twenty-seven states and Puerto Rico. The East Coast, Hawaii and Alaska also reported a small number of illnesses; but nearly 75 per cent of the total number of cases reported in California.
It is not easy for USDA to force the chicken producer to recall poultry products as government rules allow raw chicken to have a certain quantity of salmonella, which is common in poultry and is killed if consumers cook it properly. However, consumer advocates have long been demanding the government to change the controversial rules pertaining to presence of salmonella in poultry.
It is not the first time that the salmonella outbreak is being linked to Foster Farms chicken. Before the ongoing outbreak, which started around a year back, the chicken producer was linked to salmonella illnesses in 2004 and 2012. The list of symptoms of salmonella illness includes diarrhea, cramps in abdomen along with fever. It can be life-threatening people with weakened immune systems, such as children and the elderly.
