Salmonella outbreak linked to Foster Farms chicken continues to sicken people
A salmonella outbreak linked to California chicken producer Foster Farms continues to sicken people but the industry regulator USDA has so far taken no action to stop the sale of the product and inform the public about the issue.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), at least 50 new cases of salmonella illnesses were reported within the last two months, which pushed the total number of cases in the outbreak to 574. The first case was reported around a year ago.
Most of the cases were reported from the West Coast, but the outbreak is clearly widespread as victims came from as many as 27 states. However, no death case related to the outbreak has been reported so far.
Food safety activists are arguing why USDA didn't ask Foster Farms to recall the chicken products and shut down its production.
Caroline Smith DeWaal, of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said, "It's very unclear why USDA isn't taking more action to stop the sale of the product and protect the public."
Rick Schiller, a resident of San Jose, California, reported that he became seriously ill in September last year after eating some Foster Farms chicken. His condition was quite serious and he finally ended up in a hospital.
When contacted, the chicken producer said that the recent increase in cases might be due to salmonella prevalence in the warmer months. The company also claimed that it has implemented a number of new measures, such as tighter screening of birds and enhanced safety on the farms where the birds are raised.
