George Clooney may run for governor of California in 2018
Popular Hollywood actor George Clooney has plans to run for governor of California before launching a campaign for the presidency, according to the British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror.
Citing a close friend of the blockbuster film star, the tabloid reported that Democrats are wooing Clooney with hopes that he will launch a long-speculated political career, and that he could run for governor of California in 2018.
The newspaper quoted Clooney's friend, who didn't want to disclose his identity, saying, "George is hugely popular with the Democrats and where better a place to put him than as the Governor of California the home of Hollywood. It has always been a huge stronghold for the party and one that has a proven record for getting politicians in to the Oval office."
The report also claimed that if the 53-year-old Clooney agrees, he will start preparing the governor race after his marriage with British human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin. The marriage is scheduled to take place in September this year.
Clooney's links with the Democratic Party are already strong. He held several fundraising events for liberal politicians, including the one in 2012 in which participants paid $40,000 each to join a dinner party where President Obama delivered a speech.
It seems Clooney is pursuing the footsteps of Hollywood actors like Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Reagan ruled California as governor from 1967 to 1975; while Schwarzenegger remained California's governor from 2003 to 2011. Reagan went on to win the presidency in 1980.
