Chinese Tourism & Investment Increases in Southern California
Southern California is enjoying a significant growth in Chinese tourism and investment, with the number of Chinese tourists arriving Los Angeles nearly quadrupling since 2009, a newly published report from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LACEDC) revealed.
According to the report, the number of Chinese tourists to Los Angeles increased from 158,000 in 2009 to 570,000 in 2013.
Darryl Stewart, the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel's director of sales & marketing, said, "Every time I walk in the lobby, it's full of Chinese people. That didn't use to be the case."
China, which is now the Southland's top tourist generator, was not among even the ten largest sources of overseas travelers for the region. Around 50 per cent of all Chinese travelling to the United States stop in California; and around 75 per cent of those travelers come to Los Angeles.
The influx of Chinese travelers doesn't represent just vacation travel. A number of Chinese visitors are coming to the United States for investment, business, study and other purposes. Southland universities now have more Chinese students than any other group of universities in the country.
The report also estimated that the Los Angeles County could see as many as two million Chinese tourists annually by year 2020.
