Facebook will now be a Sales Platform: Report
Social Network Facebook has decided not to send notification about digital gifts from August 12. The company has decided to be a sales platform rather selling its own gifts.
According to the Facebook officials, none of the member working on the gift project will be affected as they have been shifted to other projects on which the company is working. The company management has expressed confidence in the “Buy” link under certain advertisements for users to take quick action, leading to higher conversion ratio. Selling ads through the Buy-button format will help the company to generate more revenue.
Buy button will enable the businesses advertising on Facebook to publish pages and ads which will have a Buy button at their bottom. This feature will help the users to make a purchase without leaving Facebook. Users can directly enter their credit card details on the Facebook page itself.
The company launched a gifting app Karma in September 2012. It was much similar with online shopping and gifting options available on other websites, where one can buy chocolates, teddy bears, wine, and gift cards. The most attractive feature about this app was that the person needs not to know the address of a friend. Facebook would post “wrapped” gift on the facebook wall of friend. The friend would also receive a message from the sender.
Wall Street gave a positive response to the app hoping it might generate more money. Gifting app could not match the expectations of the company. As per report published in TechCrunch, most the gifts were under the category of junk on which people did not want to spend money. Shipping of these gifts was also a bigger problem for the company. The company pulled the plug from physical gift service in August 2013.
This week, Facebook plans to turn off the option of sending messages from flagship app by android and iOS supporting devices. Instead the company will start encouraging its users to download its Messenger app on their mobile devices, for chatting with their friends.
