Donations Pouring in despite talks of Obama Impeachment
Rep. Steve Israel, the head of the Democratic Party's House reelection machine, said on Tuesday that despite talks about impeachment and a GOP lawsuit against President Obama, donations are pouring in, including $1 million on Monday.
Some conservatives have called for impeachment, but Democrats seem less likely to regain a House majority and are jittery about their chances to lose their Senate majority. According to Israel, Democrats appear to be fired up because of the lawsuit and idea of impeachment.
He claimed that $7.6 million has been raised by the party ever since plans for the lawsuit have been disclosed by House Speaker John Boehner. Such a suit was approved by a GOP-led House committee last week.
The GOP has been formally outraised by House Democrats so far this year, said Israel. However it does not ascertain the advantage of a GOP through nonprofits that are likely to take huge amount and not reveal about their contributors.
Conservative commentators started to build on the idea of impeachment soon after Obama took office. Gradually, Republican lawmakers also joined it to encourage the move.
"This whole talk about impeachment is coming from the president's own staff. And coming from Democrats on Capitol Hill. Why? Because they're trying to rally their people to give money and to show up in this year's elections. We have no plans to impeach the president", said Boehner.
Boehner said the only people who have been heard to talk about impeachment are the White House and the majority leader. Only two US presidents have been impeached in the US so far, including Andrew Johnson, in 1868, and Bill Clinton, in 1998.
