SpaceX safely lands rocket back on Earth after several failed attempts

After several failed attempts, Elon Musk-led private sector space firm SpaceX has finally managed to successfully land the first stage of Falcon 9 rocket on Earth safely.

A SpaceX commentator announced that Flacon 9 rocket managed to make a safe landing on the landing pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It was the first time in history that a rocket landed safely back on earth after returning from space.

Carrying commercial satellites from Orbcomm, the rocket lifted off at 8.29 p.m. ET yesterday. In its second stage, it put the satellites into Earth’s orbit. SpaceX officials said the first stage was crucial for them as it would bring the rocket back to earth. It touched down 10 minutes after the liftoff.

The Falcon 9 returned after placing 11 satellites in Earth’s orbit. It was a really difficult task to send a 15-story metal tube to Earth’s orbit and bring it back safely to earth for re-use. SpaceX failed in many previous attempts.

Government-run space agency NASA congratulated SpaceX on the success of its Falcon 9 mission. Previous attempt made by the private sector on June 28 had failed.

Bringing a rocket back to earth safely is expected to revolutionize space missions as it will significantly cut costs. SpaceX has plans to conduct Mars mission in the future and Mr. Musk recently said that only reusable rocket technology will be able to make Mars missions economically feasible.
