Astronauts aboard ISS get a selection of classic Christmas meals to enjoy over the holiday

At present, six astronauts are on board ISS, and orbiting around the Earth at 4.75 miles per second, whereas the world under them is celebrating Christmas. Working on the ISS is an important and risky job, and the astronauts assigned there carry out wide-ranging study into space and microgravity effects every day.

Christmas is an important day, and usually astronauts are given some time off from work to celebrate.

But, considering the constraints of staying up on ISS, the people aboard can never tuck into a freshly roasted turkey. Vickie Cloeris, who manages the food on the ISS, said that over the holiday, astronauts are given a selection of classic Christmas meals to enjoy.

The US space agency, NASA, tends to dominate the work on the ISS, so generally the Christmas food is American, which includes sweet potatoes, turkey, green beans, and cornbread. All of them are served out of tiny plastic packages that astronauts can heat up in a special onboard oven.

Cloeris said that Russia also has a notable presence in space, due to which there is some regional variation. Cloeris added that the Russians get some ‘really good mashed potatoes’, and also excellent cranberry sauce.

Besides this normal food, astronauts are also given a ‘bonus box’ every month when there are in orbit.
