Palmer Luckey: Oculus Rift pre-orders will open in 2016 Q1
In a December 22 post on Twitter, Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey has hinted at the forthcoming availability of the much-awaited commercial version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset next year.
In his tweet, Luckey announced that the Oculus will start taking pre-orders for the commercial version of its Rift VR headset in the first quarter of 2016.
The disclosure by Oculus -- that the final consumer version of the Rift VR headset is set to hit the store shelves in the coming months -- comes close on the heels of the company’s recently-released email to developers, revealing that Oculus has already started shipping the ‘Final Rift Hardware’ to developers as part of the Rift SDK 1.0.
With Luckey’s December 22 tweet having hinted at the expected timeline of the availability of the Rift VR headset to consumers, it is apparent that the Rift will be the next commercially-released VR headset to hit the markets after South Korean tech giant Samsung’s Gear VR headsets.
Luckey’s tweet, which earned hundreds of ‘likes’ and ‘retweets,’ specifically said that Oculus Rift “preorders are coming soon after new year. Enjoy a stress-free holiday, we won’t launch preorders without warning!”
