CR survey: Apple’s MacBook Air is the most reliable laptop on the market

According to the findings of a new survey carried out by Consumer Reports (CR), tech giant Apple’s MacBook Air laptop is the most reliable notebook currently available on the market.

The results of the latest CR survey are based on the responses of nearly 60,000 US consumers who purchased a laptop in the last five years.

The CR survey has revealed that the estimated failure rate of the ultra-light Apple MacBook Air laptop within the first three years of ownership is 7 percent. In comparison, Apple’s own high-end MacBook Pro line of laptops has an estimated failure rate of 9 percent.

Revealing that the combined failure rate of Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops in the first three years of ownership is estimated to be nearly 10 percent, which is the lowest failure rate among all OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) currently selling their devices to consumers.

Meanwhile, so far as the other OEMs are concerned, the CR report has disclosed that Windows-powered laptops have a significantly higher failure rate -- which is different for different Windows laptop manufacturers -- than the Apple’s MacBook line of laptops.

The CR report has also revealed that the estimated failure rate of laptops sold by Gateway and Samsung is nearly 16 percent in the first three years of ownership; while the failure rate of laptops manufactured by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba ranges between 18 percent and 19 percent.
