Long Strings of Dark Matter Form around Planets like Earth: NASA

American space agency NASA, through its latest computations, found that mysterious long strings of dark matter form around earth. The findings of the study were published in the Astrophysical Journal.

As per experts, the normal baryonic matter which usually makes up everything we touch and see covers only 15% of the total matter of the universe and rest all is the dark matter. The dark matter is an invisible mysterious substance that holds galaxies together.

It has been known that the dark matter gravitationally interacts with normal matter. Several previously conducted studies have proposed dark matter to be ‘cold’, which means that dark matter travels in universe at a speed which is far lower than the speed of light.

NASA experts through latest computations are getting insights into how dark matter may be structured within our solar system.

Prézeau in a NASA press release said, “When gravity interacts with the cold dark matter gas during galaxy formation, all particles within a stream continue traveling at the same velocity”.

New simulations by Prézeau try to find out what happens when one of these streams interacts with planets like Earth and Jupiter.

Prézeau said he found that when a dark-matter stream passes through a planet, the dark matter gets focused and bends into long hair-like structures that point directly at the planet. Dark matter gets collected at either end of these hairs, he said.

He also found that the roots of this hair-like structures are about twice as far from earth as the moon. The tip of these hair are said to be about twice that distance between earth and the moon.
