Tumblr app for iOS gets new ‘GIF Maker’ tool

In a Tuesday announcement, blogging platform Tumblr said that it has released an updated version of its iOS app, which now features a new built-in tool called the ‘GIF Maker.’ Tumblr said that the new tool will also be rolled out for its Android app in the coming weeks.

The new ‘GIF Maker’ tool launched by Tumblr for its iOS app is a mobile-only tool which will essentially take advantage of on the Tumblr community’s fascination for creating as well as sharing GIFs.

Announcing the ‘GIF Maker,’ Tumblr said that the new tool will give iOS users the ability to quickly turn their iPhone videos or burst photos into GIFs.

The new ‘GIF Maker’ tool can be accessed by the users of the Tumblr app for iOS by tapping the ‘Compose’ button in the app; and selecting the option to create a new ‘Photo’ post. The selection unfolds an option which allows users to filter their Camera Roll images by ‘GIFs’ at the bottom of the screen.

In reference to the rollout of Tumblr’s new ‘GIF Maker’ tool, Kevin Grant -- Tumblr engineering head who led project management on the new ‘GIF Maker’ tool -- described Tumblr as “the home of the GIF”; and said: “We’ve been working on GIFs for a really long time, with GIF curation, GIF search, and our Tumblr TV initiative. And something we’ve really been excited about for a long time is to actually create them.”
