Snow Leopards at Risk of Extinction Due to Climate Change
Climate change has already proved that it is not going to forgive anyone. World is becoming a hotter place, and a number of species around the world are on the verge of extinction. Melting ice is forcing polar bears to look for new and suitable places, while coral reefs are becoming white. It’s all because of global warming. Now, a new report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) showed that snow leopards are going to vanish soon and that too due to global warming.
As per the report released by the non-governmental organization this week, snow leopard populations are declining rapidly. In last about 16 years, the population of earth’s most elusive big cats has declined over 20%, the report stated. It also warned that if world fails to curb climate change, over 30% of the snow leopards’ habitat will disappear in near future.
Now the organization is asking for an action to protect the animal. According to WWF, there are no more than 4,000 snow leopards left. From last about three decades, the animal, which is usually found in the rocky mountains of Central Asia, is classified as endangered species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature had placed the animal in the list of endangered species.
According to experts, poaching, hunting and retribution killing are the major reasons of the animal’s declining population. But as snow leopards live in snow-covered peaks, it is important to curb climate change so that snow on peaks can be protected.
