AT&T announces new ‘NumberSync’ service for ‘connected’ devices

AT&T announces new wireless data plans

Bigwig US wireless carrier AT&T has announced a new single-number service called ‘NumberSync,’ which will enable its customers to use the same phone number for all their ‘connected’ devices.

According to AT&T’s announcement, the NumberSync service will give its subscribers the ability to assign their primary phone number to all their connected devices, including wearable devices, via the AT&T network. The move will essentially enable AT&T subscribers to take advantage of the Internet of Things.

As a result of the imminent launch of the NumberSync service, all of the subscribers’ connected devices will be reachable with the same number, enabling them to make as well as receive calls and text messages from their different devices – such as tablets and smartwatches - even when they are not tethered to their phone at close range.

AT&T has said that it plans to launch the first NumberSync device to market "soon;" and will expand the availability of the NumberSync service to several other devices in time for the holiday season this year.

In reference to the NumberSync service, AT&T Chief Marketing Officer David Christopher said in a blog post: "We're taking a standards-based, network approach that will make connecting a wide variety of devices easier to give you a better user experience. Our plan is for NumberSync to become the norm on a variety of our future ‘connected’ devices."
