Jesse Matthew charged in Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington’s death
A former hospital worker, who is already facing trial in the murder of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, was indicted on Tuesday in the murder of another college student who disappeared in 2009.
Jesse Matthew Jr., 33, was charged with abduction and first-degree murder in connection with the murder of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student. Harrington had disappeared after she attended a Metallica concert in Charlottesville.
The suspect already faces a life sentence as he has entered Alford plea in connection with the 2005 rape of a woman in Fairfax, Virginia.
Eighteen-year-old Graham, a Britain-born sophomore at the University of Virginia, was disappeared last year after a party. Her disappearance sent a wave of shock across the campus and made nationwide headlines.
Prosecutors say Matthew was the last person who was seen with Graham before she went missing. Matthew, a former cab driver, was arrested around a year ago on a beach in Galveston County of Texas, around 1,300 miles away from Charlottesville.
The new charged against Matthew were announced by the Albermarle County Commonwealth Attorney's Office yesterday. Prosecutors said they would seek death penalty for the suspect if he is convicted.
