Sony’s Project Morpheus VR headset gets an official name --- 'PlayStation VR'
In an announcement made at the Tokyo Games Show on Tuesday, Sony said that the official name of its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset would be ‘PlayStation VR.’
Though the ‘PlayStation VR’ official name of Sony’s Project Morpheus VR headset appears to be quite a dull and uninspiring name, Sony apparently thinks that the new name of the headset is quite okay, especially since it highlights the headset’s link with the PlayStation console.
It may seem important for a device like a VR headset to have an attractive name; and, hence, Sony’s decision to name its device as ‘PlayStation VR’ could appear boring. However, it is pertinent to note that Sony’s -- and any other VR headset manufacturer’s -- ability to compete in the nascent VR market will be less dependent on the name of its VR headset, and more on the headset’s price-tag, available content, and functionality.
Moreover, it is also seemingly important for Sony to highlight the link between the ‘PlayStation VR’ headset and the PlayStation console because the company’s President, Kazuo Hirai, considers the PlayStation console to be the centerpiece of his plan to revive profit at the company.
Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation console has regained its sales lead in videogame console market from Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One; thanks largely to the fact that Sony is offering more titles for its console and is also courting independent game developers.
