Two San Francisco cops under investigation in connection with alleged sexual assault
Two police officers from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) have been placed under investigation for sexually assaulting a woman, a spokesperson for the department confirmed.
Spokesperson Albie Esparza said an off-duty police officer allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in August, while the other interfered with a previous investigation into the case.
In a search warrant and affidavit filed in the San Francisco Superior Court, the officer being investigated allegedly sexually assaulting the woman has been identified as Officer Jason Louis Lai. The other officer who tipped Lai off is Lt. Curtis Liu.
When investigators spoke with Lai in connection with the case, Liu had already alerted him to the allegations and the investigation.
Lai had gone out with the victim and they had drunk alcohol together. The victim told police that Lai pinned her down and raped her, despite of her saying "no" to him. Lai claimed that he could not remember if he had sex with the woman.
The police department immediately placed Lai into a non-public contact assignment and relieved him of his department-issued firearm once the alleged sexual assault was reported.
