Boy hit by plane dubbed ‘miracle dude’ by mother
The 12-year-old boy who suffered head and facial injuries after being hit by a small plane on Carlsbad State Beach on Saturday has been dubbed as a "miracle dude" by his mother.
Nicholas Baer was enjoyed and celebrating the Fourth of July holiday on Saturday afternoon when a single-engine Piper PA18 crashed onto the beach, hit the sand, flipped over, and hit the boy in the head with one of its wings.
Lt. Justin McHenry of California State Parks said that the plane tumbled due to loss of power. It was carrying an advertising banner, but ditched it during its struggle to maintain balance.
The sight of tumbling plane sent a wave of shock among people present at the beach. A video captured by a person with the help of a cell phone showed people scrambling for their lives. The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. in the 4600 block of Carlsbad Boulevard, close to the Encina Power Plant.
Baer was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery and is recovering from his minor, non-life threatening injuries.
Nicholas' parents, Bill and Janice Baer, said their son was incredibly fortunate to avoid much more serious injuries in the incident. Speaking about her son, Janice added, "So I think he's a miracle dude."
The pilot was also lucky as he didn't suffer any injuries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane is owned by El Cajon-based Air Ads Inc.
