Fireworks at California block party injure at least 5 people
A block party organized in the central California city of Hollister to celebrate the 239th anniversary of the Unites States' Declaration of Independence tuned into a horrible experience for many after fireworks sent many people to the hospital.
A spokesperson for Hollister City Police Department confirmed the incident, saying at least five people injured by fireworks were hospitalized.
The spokesperson also said that man has been taken into custody on suspicion of setting off fireworks at the July Fourth block party in Hollister. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Shawn Gregory Bourdet, reportedly admitted that he was responsible for the incident.
Bourdet, who was arrest at the scene, reportedly told police that the explosion during the party on Saturday night was caused by him. Witnesses told police that a lit mortar fell over and shot projectiles into numerous people who had gathered at the outdoor block party for the July Fourth celebration.
A child with multiple injures was flown to a specialty hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. Many other children suffered moderate to severe burn injuries and one person reportedly suffered a broken leg.
Meanwhile, police said Bourdet is cooperating with investigators.
