Marriott Ups the Ante of In-Room Entertainment, Offers Netflix App on Room TV Sets
In the first-of-its-kind offering, Marriott International Inc is set to offer to its customers, access to their favorite Netflix movies, in its hotels at select locations in the US.
Currently the service has been made available at six Marriott Hotels, namely New York Marriott East Side, San Jose Marriott, Princeton Marriott, Newport Marriott, Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott Solana and Bethesda Marriott Suites. However, the Bethesda-based chain would introduce it in six more locations by summer. Later, it plans to widen the Netflix service, making it available at 100 properties by the end of 2015 and almost all of its 300 US properties by the end of 2016.
When asked, Matthew Carroll, Marriott Hotels' Vice President of brand management, said in a statement, “Our collaboration with Netflix responds to changing consumer preferences in the way our guests access and watch content”.
Guests would be able to log in using their own Netflix account, via the Netflix app that has been designed for the hotels’ TVs. In case the guests’ stay extends beyond a day, they do not need to log in again. They will remain logged in until their check out from the hotel, following which all their information will be erased too.
The news was well received by the market, with Marriott’s shares surging about 1 percent and Netflix’s stock gaining 5.5 percent.
The current partnership of Marriott International Inc with the Los Gatos streaming video service, has helped Marriott Hotels clinch the first place among hotel brands that provide customers direct access to the Netflix movies of their choice.
