Facebook announces opening of new AI research centre in Paris
On Tuesday, US-based popular social network Facebook announced the opening of its new artificial intelligence (AI) research centre in Paris.
The new AI research center is the third-of-its-kind research lab to be set up by Facebook. The company already has two AI research labs operational in the US --- in Menlo Park and in New York.
According to the information shared by Facebook executives, the Paris AI research center will initially have team of six researchers at work; with the number of researchers likely to be increased two-fold by the end of 2015. The researchers will be recruited from the leading public and private technological institutions in France.
Facebook has revealed in a recent press release that the team of researchers at the Paris research lab "will work on ambitious long term research projects in image recognition, natural language processing, speech recognition, and the kinds of physical and logical infrastructure required to run these AI [artificial intelligence] systems."
About the decision to open the new AI research center in Paris, Facebook said that Paris was a preferred location because the company's believes that some of the world's best researchers are from France. Moreover, Facebook also added that it has "a collaborative agreement in place with INRIA, a leading research institute in Paris."
