Edan Lepucki talks about some key areas of her novel ‘California’
Edan Lepucki, the author whose debut novel "California" enjoyed a strong boost from TV host Stephen Colbert's campaign against online retailer Amazon, talked about some key areas of her novel.
"California" is the story of Frida and Calvin, who are in their late 20s. After escaping a dangerous and barely functional Los Angeles, the couple starts living in the solitary home in the wilderness. In early pages of the novel, Frida discovers that she is pregnant. She encourages Calvin to abandon their solitary homes and find a community for the sake of their unborn child. After a journey of days, they reached "the Land" - a settlement where all have to labor together and share resources.
When asked if she charts, outlines or something like that to keep track of the timelines for events of her novel, Lepucki said she was as obsessive as Carrie from "Homeland" while writing a book, adding that kept zero timelines as she wrote the novel.
She claimed that there were a few times when she panicked that the chronology was totally off. After selling the novel, her editor Allie Sommer urged her to map out a timeline. She also revealed that one of main objectives of her revision was to develop the back story of the terrorist group that Frida's brother Micah was involved in.
The author didn't find herself worrying much about whether one character of her novel might use a certain phrase or structure of a sentence in a particular way as she was in a first-person narrative.
Talking about gender dynamics, one of the key elements of the novel, she said she didn't precisely set out to write a novel about gender, but she couldn't help writing about it because gender is so much a part of her life, like everyone's lives.
The novel got a big boost from Stephen Colbert, who campaigned against Amazon that discouraged customers from buying titles from publisher Hachette Book Group. He urged viewers and his thousands of Twitter followers to buy "California" from independent stores.
