BBC Improving its Coverage on Climate Change
BBC has been making serious efforts to improve its coverage of scientific topics, including climate change, so that people are not being provided with false information, according to a new report prepared by the BBC's independent governing body, the BBC Trust.
In the past, BBC has been scathingly criticized on several occasions for making mistakes in their coverage of climate change. For instance, a report by members of Parliament's science and technology select committee said in April that BBC gave same value to opinions and scientific data in their coverage of climate change, thereby offering false balance in its reporting on climate change.
BBC faced the pressure from demands of avoiding the false balance between fact and opinion and does some sort of training for its staff to accurately represent the weight of scientific agreement.
The BBC Trust has expressed satisfaction over the way BBC is currently training its journalists in science coverage. Editors and correspondents were directed to attend a workshop before the IPCC's updated report was released last year. A briefing was also provided to them by senior members of the IPCC.
The Trust said that three climate change scientists were included in a panel that offered views about what implications editorials have for knowledge of climate studies conducted by scientists. According to the Trust, a substantial contribution was made by these moves to provide balanced and proportionate coverage of the IPCC report.
A study commissioned by the Trust in 2010 tells about efforts being made by BBC to improve its science coverage. BBC content was correct, but there were problems like a false balance between broad scientific consensus and marginal dissenting opinions.
