Exposure to PFCs may be bad for Health
Many international scientists have authored the 'Madrid Statement', their take on the potential health and environmental dangers of certain chemicals used in almost everything from pizza boxes to outdoor clothing, carpets and furniture.
They published the statement in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. The focus of substances is generally known as PFCs - perfluorinated chemicals. Main concern of 200 scientists from 38 countries is that exposure from the chemicals is harmful for health and bad for environment as well.
It is said that by the end of 2015, some of the polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFASs, will be phased out in America. But concerning factor is that their place will be taken by their alterative having same concerning characteristics.
In the document, researchers have highlighted negative factors of both, old and new chemicals. "It's a very serious decision to make chemicals that last that long, and putting them into consumer products with high levels of human exposure is a worrisome thing", affirmed Arlene Blum, a chemist at the University of California, Berkeley.
In the statement, the researchers want steps should be taken to curb the production of PFASs and also, to identify safer alternatives. But the industry groups affirmed that the newer versions of the chemicals are safe.
