Video captures Firefighter falling through Roof of Burning Garage

An incident, in which a Fresno firefighter fell through the roof of a burning garage in a frightening scene, was captured in a video. The firefighter is said to be in critical condition. A wall of flames rising from the garage is seen in the video, in which Capt. Pete Dern was caught. The video has been released by the Fresno Fire Department so as to show the risks faced by firefighters, when they are at work.

Firefighters and bystanders took Dern out of the flames within minutes. Battalion Chief Todd Tuggle told the Fresno Bee that people were shouting and were running for help and the whole incident was a distress for citizens.

According to Fresno City Firefighters - Local 753, Dern has suffered second- and third-degree burns over nearly 65% of his body. According to the update on the Facebook, "He is still in critical condition and has a long road to recovery; physicians estimate 14 to 15 more surgeries in the several months to come".

He is said to be the most respected fire captain and is also considered as a guide to many in the department. Dr. William Dominic told NBC News that he suffered from a lot of burns and they will be looking after him for a long time.

The Fresno Bee reported that Dern has also suffered inhalation injuries. According to the newspaper, before falling into the building, Dern was on the roof to provide ventilation, which is a way to fight the kind of fire, which broke out.
