Docker acquires Kitematic for undisclosed amount

On Tuesday, Docker Inc announced the acquisition of privately-held Kitematic for an undisclosed amount. Docker Inc is the main commercial sponsor behind the Docker open-source container application virtualization technology; while Kitematic is an open-source project which facilitates users in the deployment and running of Docker containers on a desktop operating system. Presently, Kitematic supports only the Apple Mac OS X, though a Windows version is also apparently on the cards on the near future.

The acquisition of Kitematic is a significant move by Docker, especially since Kitematic claims to have proven popularity among developers using Docker for the first time. The company has revealed that, in less than six months, it received more than 2,600 stars on GitHub.

Announcing Docker's acquisition of Kitematic, Docker founder and CTO Solomon Hykes said that the acquisition deal makes the Kitematic tool a Docker product; with the three employees of Kitematic to join Docker's team in San Francisco.

However, despite the acquisition by Docker, Kitematic will continue to be a free and open-source project.

Noting that the Kitematic technology has immense potential as a Docker deployment tool, Kitematic co-founder Sean Li said: "Right now, our focus is to get people on Windows to be able to use Docker and make it really easy so that users can be up and running with Docker within a couple of minutes."
