Sony unveils latest prototype of Project Morpheus VR headset
At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Sony unveiled the latest prototype of its virtual-reality (VR) headset, which is code-named Project Morpheus. The unveiling of the new Project Morpheus prototype by Sony indicates that the company has come a step closer to the release of the final version of its VR headset.
The new Project Morpheus prototype is fairly similar in appearance to the company's initial prototype of the VR headset introduced in 2014. However, Sony claims that the new prototype includes "a lot of improvements" under the hood, to unfold a better experience for the users.
According to Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, the latest Project Morpheus prototype showcased by the company is "close to the final consumer product."
One of the most noteworthy enhancements which the new Project Morpheus prototype boast over its predecessor is a new 5.7-inch display which is two-fold faster than the display of the initial prototype. With regard to the new display of the latest prototype, Yoshida said that the Project Morpheus headset will be capable of producing VR experiences which will not be easily distinguishable from the real world.
Meanwhile, about the expected availability of the Project Morpheus VR headset, Sony said that the headset will likely hit the markets if the first half of 2016. However, the company has not divulged the expected cost of the device.
