Amazon unveils voice-controlled interactive speaker --- ‘Echo’
Online retail biggie Amazon unveiled a new product on Thursday --- a cylindrical-shaped voice-controlled interactive speaker dubbed 'Echo.'
The new 'Echo' speaker gives the users the ability to stream music as well as order items from the online retailer. The unveiling of the device by Amazon marks an evident effort by the company to reach into the digital lives of consumers.
According to the information shared by Amazon, the 'Echo' speaker is controlled by the users' voice; and it is capable of doing a number of things, like giving news and weather reports to users, creating to-do lists, setting a timer, waking the users up in the morning, and even telling them jokes.
Amazon has mentioned on its product page that the 'Echo' interactive speaker is always on and connected to Wi-Fi. However, it can hear the users only when they use a particular "wake word" which they have to select when they first set up the device.
The 'Echo' speaker is priced at $199; though Amazon Prime subscribers can get the speaker for $999 for a limited time period. Presently, the speaker is only available to customers with an invitation, which can be requested by going to the Amazon website.
Describing the 'Echo' speaker as "a new category of device," Amazon spokeswoman Kinley Pearsall said that the 'Echo' will "get smarter over time, including adding new services."
