AARP ranks California among top 10 for long-term care

California ranks among the top 10 states in the U.S. in providing long-term support services and systems for older and disabled adults, according to a recently released AARP report.

The report says that more than four million Californians assist their aging parents, spouses or other individuals who need long-term care and medical support. The collective labor value of this unpaid care totals at around $47 billion per annum.

It adds that a lot more people will enter their 80s in the next twelve years, which will increase demands for long term care system significantly.

AARP based its report on 26 different variables in five key areas including affordability & access; choice of setting & provider; effective transitions; quality of life & care; and support for family caregivers. This year’s new indicators included span of stay in a nursing home and the use of anti-psychotic medicines by nursing homes.

California grabbed the ninth spot on the list of the states that are providing long-term support services and systems for older and disabled adults. The Golden State managed to grab a rank in the top ten because of its wide range of choices in long-term care providers and settings.

AARP’s senior vice president Susan Reinhard said states that encouraged more care at home received higher marks. Speaking on the topic, she said, "It's a philosophy, it's a value that states have and they work hard to make that happen.”

More precisely, California scored 2nd rank for choice of provider & setting; 14th for affordability & access; 22nd for effective transitions; 24th for quality of life & care; and 24th for support for family caregivers.
