Stanford University: Well-known for its science & engineering programs, Stanford grabbed the top rank among Californian institutes, and the 7th position nationwide. Harvey Mudd College: This private-sector liberal arts college also focuses on science and engineering, while also offering various courses in the arts & humanities. It was ranked 3rd in California and #18 nationally.

University of Southern California (USC): This is a large private-sector university that offers a number of highly ranked programs. With its impressively high freshmen retention rate, low student loan default rate and a high earnings boost, it grabbed the fourth spot on the list of California's top academic institutions.

Pomona College: Founded in 1887, the New England-type Pomona College is a private liberal arts institution that offers courses in a number of popular subjects like mathematics, economics, psychology and molecular biology.
