Twitter beginning to publicly test ‘Buy’ button for posts
On Monday, popular microblogging service Twitter said in an announcement that it is beginning to publicly test a 'Buy' button, which will enable the users to purchase products directly from the Twitter mobile apps.
According to Twitter, the 'Buy' button can be embedded in posts to give the users the ability to buy a product within a few clicks.
Currently available only for a number of US users, the tests of the 'Buy' button will initially be aimed at selling limited-edition or time-sensitive items including T-shirts and event tickets. The button will, in due course, create a revenue stream for Twitter which presently generates virtually all of its income from advertising.
As per Twitter, the new 'Buy' button will initially be tested using a number of artists, brands and non-profit organizations that will - in the coming weeks - unfold a mechanism for Twitter users to purchase products through the social network.
About the 'Buy' button, Twitter said in an official press release: "Users will get access to offers and merchandise they can't get anywhere else and can act on them right in the Twitter apps for Android and iOS; sellers will gain a new way to turn the direct relationship they build with their followers into sales."
